Lakshadweep

Home to a few of the most beautiful and exotic islands and beaches of India, Lakshadweep lies 400km off the southwest coast of the Arabian Sea. The smallest union territory of India has only 36 islands having a total area of 32 sq. kilometres. It’s made up of 12 atolls, 3 reefs and 5 submerged banks out of which ten Islands are inhabited. Lakshadweep tourism offers a great opportunity to beach lovers and scuba divers.

Best Time to Visit

September to February is the best time to visit Lakshadweep Islands as the climatic conditions remain pleasant (between 20-30-degree Celsius). March to May are also good months but the weather will be hotter by 2-3-degree Celsius. The monsoon months of June to August experience high temperatures and heavy rainfall followed by high humidity, hence a lot of activities are shut down.

Cuisine

Seafood and the aroma of coconut and Malabar spices dominate the cuisine offered in the Lakshadweep islands. Some of the famous local foods of these islands are as follows: Octopus Fry, Mus Kavaab, Fish Tikka, Fish Pakora, Maasu Podichath. Mus Kavaab is one of the sought after delicacies of the island. It is prepared from boneless fish. Maasu refers to dried tuna. Coconut bondas and Moah appam are famous local sweets, while kadalakka is sugar-coated sweets made of ground rice and pulses.

Shopping

Lakshadweep is most famous for its handicrafts work that is crafted out of the sea products such as shells, oysters, corals and stones. The people of the island are engaged in the handicrafts business making junk jewellery, home decors, ornamentals, etc. out of the sea products. You can also buy some fish and coconut products. The coconut powder and oil are the specialties of the island.

Language

The principal languages of Lakshadweep are Malayalam, Jeseri (Dweep Bhasha) and Mahl. Bengali, Guajarati, Hindu, Kannada, Oriya, Tamil, Telegu, Konkoni, Urdu and English are also spoken by the migrants who are in employment in the Union Territory.

1. BANGARAM ISLAND

Bangaram is a tiny teardrop shaped island, which lies very close to Agatti and Kavaratti. The tourist resort on this island provides an amazing opportunity for guests to unwind from the pressures and tensions of modern life. The sunrises and sunsets are a treat to the eyes by the sparkling beach, and a range of activities to indulge in makes the stay worthwhile, but even if you choose only to laze around, the serene beach of Bangaram Island should be on your bucket list.

2. AGATTI ISLANDS

Agatti Islands is considered another jewel from the Lakshadweep group of islands in India. The island is situated on one of the coral isles of Lakshadweep islands and is few of the islands from the Lakshadweep group that is inhabited by people. One may explore the island on foot or rent a two-wheeler to commute. Every corner of the island is rich with natural vegetation and beautiful geographical formations. Agatti Island is the only island belonging to the Lakshadweep group with its airport that makes the island extremely accessible from major parts of the world. Kalpitti is a small uninhabited island which is in the Agatti Lagoon.

3. MINICOY ISLAND

One of the 36 small islets of Lakshadweep group of Islands, Minicoy, also known as Maliku in the local language is one of the best-kept secrets of India. This picturesque destination is a popular tourist spot and has gained immense popularity due to activities like tuna canning, tuna fishing and the presence of pristine palm-fringed beaches. Tourists can enjoy some of the most memorable moments here during winters and the onset of summer, as the weather here is ideal during those months.

4. KAVARATTI ISLANDS

Kavaratti is a small island spread across an area of 3.93 sqm km and one of the most beautiful gems from the Lakshadweep islands. The island is home to 12 atolls, five submerged banks, and three coral reefs. The spectacular views of the Arabian Sea, the sparkling white-sand beaches offer solace amidst the tranquil nature.

Kavaratti is best known for its coconut trees, a vast expanse of marine life, beautiful sceneries and the enthralling water sports.

5. KALPENI ISLAND

Also known as Koefaini, Kalpeni islands is a group of three islands and is one of the most picturesque areas of Lakshadweep. Cheriyam, Pitti and Tillakkam are the islands which together forms the Kalpeni islands.

These islands are inhabited and are frequently visited by tourists. Kalpeni is famous for its beautiful lagoon surrounding the island and is highly rich in Coral life. Naturally, this place is among the must-see places in Lakshadweep. This is also a great spot to enjoy water sports including Scuba Diving, Snorkeling, Reef walking, canoeing, kayaking and sailing yachts.

6. MARINE MUSEUM

Situated in Kavaratti, Marine museum showcases plethora of marine related artifacts and aims at promoting marine products and its preservation. The interesting thing about the museum is its aquarium which has few of the most striking species of sea fishes and water animals.
The beautiful, colorful fishes and aquatic species are very pretty and it is a great sight to see these ornamental species. It is also a good place if you are interested in collecting information about marine life and related stuff.

7. KADMAT ISLAND

Sprawling over 9.3 kms in length, Kadmat Island is a gorgeous island which is part of the Amindivi subgroup of islands in the Lakshadweep archipelago. Boasting of silvery white beaches, sunkissed shores, wonderful blue lagoons, azure blue waters, and vibrant coral reefs, Kadmat Island is a travellers’ delight.
The picturesque island is infested with marine turtles which live and breed here. Other than that, the island just has one inhabited village called Kadmat where fishing is the major occupation. Kadmat Island offers a host of activities to its guests which is why it is thronged by thousands of tourists every year. Some of the most popular activities and things to do on the island are scuba diving, kayaking, snorkelling and paragliding. Besides, you can also just sit and sun soak and admire the resplendent surroundings. You can also choose to avail some of the many amazing spa and massage services available here.

8. THINNAKARA ISLAND

Thinnakara Island is situated just opposite side of Bangaram Island and share the vast lagoon and coralline banks, the actual lagoon area amounts to 125.21 Sq kms. On the north-south edge of the lagoon Parali (i); Parali (ii) are situated.

Thinnakara is a tiny teardrop shaped island which lies 8 km northeast from Agatti, where the airport is located. The panorama encompasses magnificent lagoons, sylvan sea shores, sun drenched sand and the enchantment of swaying palms, spectacular marine flora and fauna, and all these harmonies to form a colorful kaleidoscope typical of an archipelago paradise. During the nights, phosphorescent plankton washed ashore on the coral sands imparts a blue glow to the beach which is totally enchanting.
