Best Time to Visit

Aizawl can be visited throughout the year. The summers are pleasant with maximum temperatures touching 25 degrees Celsius, while the winters are very cold with the temperatures occasionally dropping to 3-4 degrees Celsius. However, to get a true taste of the festivities owing to the winter holiday season, Aizawl should definitely be visited in the winter season.

Cuisine

Rice is the staple food of Mizoram, while Mizos love to add non-vegetarian ingredients in every dish. Fish, chicken, pork and beef are popular meats among Mizos. Bai is one of the most popular dishes in Mizoram. Bai is prepared by using pork, bamboo shoots, steamed vegetables, and local herbs and spices. It is served as a soup and is easily found in every street and corner of Mizoram. Famous food of Mizoram includes delectable dishes i.e. Bamboo Shoot Fry, Bekang, Koat Pitha etc. Zu is a popular local beverage of the State.

Shopping

Mizoram is a state filled with shopping markets where one can buy extremely valuable and precious bamboo and cane products, baskets, shawls and other items. Some of the best places to shop in Aizawl are New Market, Ritz Market, Bazar Bungkawn, Thakthing Bazar and Solomon’s Cave. However, the best place to shop in Aizawl is inarguably Bara Bazaar.

Language

Mizo is the official language of Mizoram, along with English. English is much more spoken than Hindi.

Major Tourist Destinations

1. AIZAWL

Lying at a height of 1132 m above sea level, Aizawl is a quaint city and the Capital of the State of Mizoram. Primarily dominated by the Mizo Tribe, Aizawl and its surrounding areas are lush with rolling hills and abundant greenery. The city, along with the majority of the state is known for its agricultural produce and ethnic handicrafts and apparel. Aizawl is well connected via roads and air connectivity to other major hubs of northeast India such as Silchar and Guwahati in Assam. An important thing to note is that an Inner Line Pass or ILP is required for entry into Mizoram which is available on Guwahati, Silchar, Shillong, New Delhi and Kolkata.

2. LUNGLEI

This is one of the most breath-taking Mizoram destinations that deserve your attention and time. It’s lovely landscapes and the scenic setting makes it one of the top places to see in Mizoram. There is a rock-like bridge structure in the village and thus, the name Lunglei is given to it.

3. SERCHHIP

Most famous for being the district with the highest literacy rate in India, Serchhip in Mizoram is a place that can provide you a unique and vibrant experience.

This small town can give one the experience of a small village, the life, activities and colors that it sustains in the everyday. Some of the popular villages one can visit are the Neihloh and Buangpuri. The nature too plays a role in tourism with spots such as the Vantawng Khawhltha waterfall. Other places here include the Chhingpui Thlan and Hriantrengna lung.

4. CHAMPHAI – ADVENTURE HUB

Champhai and its surrounding regions are primarily known for their natural beauty and vast valleys of rice fields. It is known as the ‘Rice Bowl of Mizoram’ due to being a major region of rice cultivation. Also, its vibrant seasonal orchids lend it a certain romanticism and aesthetic appeal.

Champhai has a number of tourist attractions mostly including natural settings. These include a cave called the Kungawrhi Puk, a river called Tiau Lui, Lianchhiari Lunglen Tlang and a few more. Rih Dil Lake is another famous natural attraction known to Champhai and the state of Mizoram. Adventure enthusiast can indulge in some trekking at the Thasiama Seno Neihna which is about 83 Kms south of Champhai.

5. MAMIT – HAVEN FOR WILDLIFE ENTHUSIASTS

Mamit is one of the top tourist attractions in Mizoram. There are a lot of attractions in this place and most of the wildlife enthusiasts love to go to Mamit. The Dampa Wildlife Sanctuary is one of the best attractions to visit here and you can spot peacock, Malabar pied hornbill, crested serpent eagle, and emerald-dove. If you love to be in the wild, this is the best place to visit. You can spot some of the rarest species like rhesus macaque and leaf monkeys too.

6. KOLASIB

Among the newer districts and the smallest of the eleven in Mizoram, Kolasib lies in northern Mizoram sharing a border with the Cachar district of Assam. It lies at a distance of 79 Kms north of Aizawl. Like most other districts of Mizoram, Kolasib is bountiful in culture and natural beauty. Tlawng River is the best attraction of Kolasib with its beautiful river banks and adjoining forests serving as a countryside getaway. Leisurely boating can be done by requesting some locals who would be willing to ferry around tourists. Apart from sightseeing, experiencing the local food and learning about handicrafts is another activity which travellers can partake in.
