Best Time to Visit

The time between October and March is known to be the best time to visit Pondicherry city.

Major Tourist Destinations

1. PARADISE BEACH

Paradise Beach, also known as Plage Paradiso, is situated in Chunnambar, close to Pondicherry town. Adorned with the golden sand, this is a little-isolated beach. To reach here, you have to take a ferry across the backwater, which takes around 20-30 minutes. There are a few shacks along the main entrance to the beach, and you can get fresh coconut water and some simple snacks – don’t expect any fancy street food though.

Part of the fun in reaching the beach is the beautiful ferry from the boathouse – the backwaters on the way to the beach are green and have thick mangrove forests. Especially after the monsoons, the backwaters are fresh and green. You can spot a lot of birds while on the ride – and photography enthusiasts would relish the opportunity to get some great photos here.

2. AUROBINDO ASHRAM

Pondicherry was the residence of Sri Aurobindo (Indian freedom fighter), was founded in 1926. It is one of the well known and wealthy ashrams of India. The ashram has one of the prime destinations for tourists and spiritual seekers. If you’re looking for peace and serenity in Pondicherry, this place should definitely be on your list.

3. AUROVILLE

Located around 15 km from the city of Pondicherry, Auroville is located in Tamil Nadu and was founded in 1968 by Mirra Alfassa, a disciple of Aurobindo and fondly known as the ‘Mother’ of Sri Aurobindo Society. This place is the epitome of tranquillity and proves as the perfect escape for the ones in search of peace. The best way to experience Auroville ashram is to actually just sit in one of the cafes, and talk to some of the residents here about their experience of living in the city.

4. PROMENADE BEACH

If you need a calm and quaint place perfect for an evening stroll, this is among the calmest places to see in Pondicherry. The sea breeze and the sights and sounds work as a relaxing potion on your min and make you forget about all your worries of the world and work. A leisurely stroll at this beach during sunset or sunrise with your better half by your side will surely be one of the most romantic things you do in Pondicherry.

5. BASILICA OF THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS

One of the most sacred and religious places of Pondicherry, the Church of Sacred Heart of Jesus is situated 2.5 km away from the Pondicherry Bus Station on the south boulevard of the town. One of the 21 Basilicas in India and the only one in Pondicherry, this church was set up by the French missionaries in 1908 which was given the status of the Basilica in 2011. One of the most beautiful Catholic Churches of Pondicherry, the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus beautifully showcases the Gothic architecture.

6. ARIKAMEDU

Situated within a half hour drive of the French colonial town of Pondicherry, Arikamedu is an ancient Roman trade centre hidden from the eyes and ears of the commonplace Tamil tourism. Its name has been taken from the Tamil word- ‘Arikanmedu’ which means ‘eroding mount’.

7. FRENCH WAR MEMORIAL

French War Memorial is a stylish structure located in the Goubert Avenue and is dedicated to the soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War.
